It has been three months since our first follow up and most of you have settled in your new places of work. During our second calls, we were curious to know where people preferred to work; take a look at our results to find out where most of your classmates are working, you get to see who has the taller bar, or the bigger piece of the pie!
1. Most of the participants interviewed were working in towns; with the numbers slightly different among the pre-service and distance learners, as shown below:

a) For the pre-service participants, distribution among the MTCs was as follows:

b) For the distance learners, distribution among the MTCs was as follows:

2. The pie chart below is a representation of the distribution of all the working nurses

Close to quarter of Kenyan cohort members have visited the blog and most were eager to leave messages.
During the second round of calls, most of the participants wished their counterparts all the best in life, as they reach out to achieve their dreams. They encouraged former classmates to continue working hard in the nursing profession; to keep participating in the research and to keep in touch.

Those who were already working gave a challenge to those looking for jobs to explore all opportunities available to registered nurses; those with the opportunity to further their studies were encouraged to specialize and gain more exposure and experience. Participants encouraged former classmates to let each other know of any job opportunities

Some of the unique comments included:
• Keep working for excellence, give quality care to your patients and bring out innovative ways of improving the nursing profession, James-Nairobi.
• When we were in school, we had varied opinions about working outside Nairobi but I have come to realize that outside Nairobi, you get more exposure and are able to practice and gain more experience, than in Nairobi where you are all crowded and ignored, Margaret-Kirinyaga.
• Working as a nurse in the rural area is quite interesting and challenging, as opposed to working in a hospital, where you are only giving the medication that the doctor has prescribed; in the field we get to interact with the patients in their daily environment, Jacinta-Kakamega.

Keep checking this website for more updates, and the upcoming re-union plans. You do not want to miss out!

Habari from kenya

Hi, subsequent to the recruitment of cohort members last year, 244 members have done and passed their Nursing Council Examinations and are registered nurses. The mean age of the South African cohort is 31 years. This is much higher than Thailand, where the average age of the cohort members is only about 22 years. In Thailand the oldest cohort member is 25 years of age. Here in South Africa, our oldest cohort member is 56 years old and 266 (71%) cohort members are over 25 years.

An overwhelming majority of the South African cohort members were born in three provinces: Gauteng (40%), North West (34%) and Limpopo (9.5%). Firstly, we began the process of capturing the data contained in all the questionnaires completed by our 377 cohort members. As shown in the picture above, it took 11 boxes to transport the approximately 3400 questionnaires to the data capturing company. The pictures below show the data capturers hard at work. In what is known as double-entry, they are capturing all the information in all the questionnaires twice. The two databases are then compared and any contradictions or errors corrected, thus ensuring 100% accuracy. This process will hopefully be completed by Friday.

Secondly, and as many of you experienced first-hand, we have also kicked-off our first effort to confirm/update the contact details of our cohort members. All-in-all, we are targeting about 250 cohort members now. The rest will be contacted early in 2009. About 100 cohort members verified their contact details by SMS (Thanks for responding to the request!) and over the last 5 days we have personally spoken to another approximately 120. Again, the hope is to complete the last few remaining verifications in the next day or two.

Our next step will be to use the entered data to produce a basic profile of the South African cohort, which we will hopefully be able to post on this website in December. It will then be possible to compare the South African cohort with the Thai one, whose profile is already up on the website.

Until then, good luck with your exam results and with those night shifts that we know some of you are working at the moment!

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; At the same time, we will also begin the process of verifying the contact details of the students from the first group of nursing training institutions to join the cohort: the Ann Latsky, Mmabatho and S.G. This is why we have not provided much information on data collection. However, we are now analysing the collected data, and so it is a good opportunity to share some information about the Thai cohort members.

Since April, 342 nursing students have taken part in data collection activities. They came from 4 colleges scattered all over Thailand (see map below). The first group of 78 students came from a college located in Songkla, in the South of the country. The second group to join (82 students) came from the capital Bangkok. Another 65 students from the Northern city of Chiang Mai followed them, and finally we included in the cohort 117 nursing graduates from Ubon Ratchatani, in the Eastern part of the country.

Most nursing students in Thailand are female, hence it is not surprising that there are only 16 male cohort members! All the cohort members are very young, with the average age being just over 22 years (the oldest Thai cohort member is only 25 years old!!). None of the Thai cohort members have started their own families yet.

83% of the Thai cohort were born in rural areas, mostly in the North-Eastern province (around Ubon Ratchatani). Most attended a college in their birth province. However, amongst the cohort members from the North East, a third studied in Bangkok and a further 13% in Chiang Mai in the North.

The South African and Kenyan nursing students are still joining the cohort, but the Thai nurses have already started working. Most of them are expected to work near the college where they studied... to know for sure where they are, stay tuned, as the results of the first follow-up with the Thai nurses will soon be available !

NWU joins cohort

On Monday night, a small group of 9 nursing students from the Potchefstroom campus of North West University became the latest members of the CREHS Cohort in South Africa. Most recently, on 23 September, 73 very enthusiastic (picture above) students from Excelsius Nursing College in Klerksdorp in the North West Province of South Africa decided to participate in the research. This brings the total number of cohort members in South Africa to 326.

On the same day, the researchers in Kenya collected data from 31 distance learners from the Murang'a Medical Training College. On the 16th of September, 48 pre-service learners from the same college joined the cohort and a few days before that 29 distance learners from the Meru Medical Training College took part in the baseline data collection activities. The basic idea is to recruit final-year nursing students in these countries into a cohort/long-term research group and to collect information from them about their career choices and the things they value in their professional lives and working environments. This information will be useful in making recommendations about how to improve the work experiences and retention of health workers in the health systems where they are needed most.

Over the next year or so, the research will involve three key steps:

Baseline data collection, which usually takes place in selected nursing training institutions before the students graduate. This entails the completion of several questionnaires, conducting focus group discussions and collecting participants' contact details so that they can be reached at a later stage. Baseline data collection was completed in Thailand in March 2008, is underway in South Africa and should start in Kenya at the end of the month.

Cohort contact, in terms of which the researchers will contact members from time to time to verify contact details and get a very quick update on their professional situation.

Follow up, which will involve further detailed data collection with the cohort members. This will take place approximately one year after the baseline data collection.

More information on the research can be obtained from any of the participating research organisations (see the list on the side of this internet page).

WHY THIS PAGE?
Over time, we hope to stay in touch with as many of the cohort members as possible. This internet page has been created to try and keep contact and to share pictures, findings from the research and general news, especially news about the lives and work experiences of the cohort members.

So, stay online and don't hesitate to send us your comments or suggestions about how this website can be improved and about what information you would like to see on it.

News that will appear on this page very soon include:

updates about the baseline data collection in South Africa

the first findings to emerge from the research in Thailand.
